OSHA News for May 2023 Hello, This was a nonstop month of training, editing work for clients, and conducting food audits. The food industry wants to be ready for the OSHA Inspections. I have done more food audits in the last six months than in the previous 12 years. 10 Most Common Citations in the food industry include: 1. Periodic Inspection does not have the machine and the person performing the inspection. 2. Written lockout procedures do not explain where the pressure gages are located. 3. Verification is missing in the lockout procedures steps. 4. No die block for the vertical compactor rams. 5. No guard or Gate for the pallet wrapping machines. 6. No training in the use of the 3000 psi pressure washer. 7. No maximum lift weight in the ergo program. 8. No max Pull Push forces in the ergo program. 9. Conveyors do not have emergency stop or pull cords where people are working. 10. No goggles worn for the cleaners using corrosives. I average 23 OSHA issues per inspection, so these are the most common. This Month's ppt is about residential fall protection. Many things have changed in the last ten years. I am shocked by how many 10-hour classes I am doing this year. I refer the 30 hours to the NSEC, CSC, and others. Stay cool this summer. It may be a hot one. OSHA News for April 2023 Hello, This was a month of hours of training. I am at 1434 trained already in 4 months. Confined Space and Lockout are the popular topics. I did some research with OSHA on the 2022 fatals for the first nine months. 145 Falls Jan-Oct 2022 • 29 - Roofs • 27 – Ladders • 12 – Scaffolds • 8 - Skylights • 7 – Stairs • 6 – Forklift Basket • 6 – Truss Rafter • 5 - Pond • 4 – Fall through Floor • 4 - Aerial Lifts Stairs are usually 1-2. I am seeing many stair falls while using a cell phone or carry boxes. If near water, a life preserver or flotation vests needs to be worn. Workers within 15 feet of the roof edge are exposed to a fall off the roof. The Step Ladder companies added a new on the stickers. “Face the ladder with a firm grip.” This prohibits two hand work or turning sideways. There were 3 scaffold fall impalements in 2022. A forklift basket must be approved by the manufacturer or be angineered basket. The Food industry is under a Regional Emphasis in IL and WI. $1.9 million for egregious ockout training. OSHA News for February 2023 Hello, Another nonstop month. I am booked until August. In February, I did Two custom OSHA 10 classes. One was for the printing industry and the other for residential roofing. This is the future of training. I refer the 30 hours classes to www.buildsafe.org or www.nsec.niu.edu. There in no time to do four days in a row for the class. Some successes with companies in 2022. #1 Company reduced injuries and got to EMR of 0.97. This was the first time under 1.0 in 40 years. #2. Highway contractor got EMR 0.75. They bought 60 new pickup trucks for the managers and lead employees. #3 Lumber company of 23 got to a record 5 years of no recordables. #4 Data center project had no recordables with 250,000 hours worked. The use liftpods vs ladders at the site. #5 Large Japanese company was world class with IR of 1.3 vs. industry average of 4.1 The president flew in from Japan to congratulate the company on the fourth successful year. #6. Large wood products company of over 200 had a zero recordable year. #7 Chemical company of 80 had IR of 1.0 #8 Small wood manufacturing company got an OSHA Noise REP, Combustible Dust NEP, Machine Guarding NEP and passed with no citations. OSHA News for March 2023 Hello, Another busy month of training on weekends and night. I am over 1000 people trained in three months. I will be speaking at the ASSP Three Rivers Chapter meeting on training techniques. https://threerivers.assp.org/events/safety-training-tips/ It was good to see people at the Chicagoland Construction Safety Conference. It looks like a good year for construction work and many have full schedules for the summer and fall. I am like the tool box talks with a mini quiz at the end. It is much better than signing the tool box talk. I keep seeing company use the online training for forklift despite the standard requiring a demonstration of proficiency. OSHA News for January 2023 Hello, It was another busy month with training and weekends of work. I passed the Safety Trained Suspervisor Construction examination in January. It is a BCSP test that is growing in popularity for site safety people. It is more of an OSHA construction test, and that is what sites should have. No math, risk management, and system safety. Thanksfor the support.  This month’s ppt is MostFrequently cited standards for General Industry. I want to thank OSHA for the information.Lockout, Respirators, Hazcom, and Machine guarding are dominating the top 10. The Food industry is onOSHA’s radar in 2023. They will investigate complaints about heat, lockout, andmachine guarding. They will focus on cleaning safety of mixers and equipment. The 3m Paddle Ear Plugswere the most popular in the classes this year. I thought they were verycomfortable to wear. I will be ordering a new box from emergent safety.
