OSHA News for
December 2018
It was a busy
month until Christmas. I want to thank all that helped me get better and showed
me new solutions to several hazards.
I trained 2331
people for the year and here is the top five topics taught for 2018.
1. Confined
space,
2. Fall
protection.
3. Silica
4. Safety
Management
5. Trenching
The OSHA 511
class – OSHA General Industry Standards was the most popular class followed the
OSHA 30 for Construction, and the OSHA 10 hour class for industry.
This month’s
powerpoint is CHST Math prep. I have found many want to take the certification
and have trouble with the math section. Over 20 people that I have helped have
passed the certification exams.
I have free study
guides for the CHST. I recommend the SPAN ASP prep books for $275.

OSHA News.
1) Iowa OSHA top
Officials fired. A complaint alleging that employees at Iowa's workplace safety
agency used a toy banana to make sexual jokes triggered an investigation that
led to the removal of two top officials, according to a copy obtained by The Associated
Press.
And you wonder
why sexual harassment training is an annual topic at many companies.

2) Yet a Center
analysis of Treasury Department data found that only about 12 percent of OSHA
debts have been collected in recent years.

3) Lockout Discussion:
" Among the features essential to a compliant master key procedure is a
reliable method to ensure that access to the master key will be carefully
controlled by the employer such that only those persons authorized and trained
to use the master key in accordance with the employer's program can gain
access."

4) BLS fatality
data was published today. 5147 workplace deaths; down 43.
Fatal falls were
at their highest level in the 26-year history of the Census of Fatal
Occupational Injuries (CFOI)
accounting for
887 (17 percent) worker deaths.
Transportation
incidents remained the most frequent fatal event in 2017 with 2,077 (40
percent) occupational fatalities.
Unintentional
overdoses due to nonmedical use of drugs or alcohol while at work increased 25
percent from 217 in 2016 to 272 in 2017.
This was the
fifth consecutive year in which unintentional workplace overdose deaths have
increased by at least 25 percent.
Age 55 and older
was 1930 deaths, highest % ever.
460 were waste
management workers.
Construction was
down but still over 900 deaths. Manufacturing was down and over 200.
Truck drivers
were nearly 600.
Highway deaths
with vehicle drivers were 1299, a multi year high.
Falls at same
surface record high at 151.
Falls to lower
level highest at 713.
Texas has most
deaths at 534.
IL and IA were
only Midwest states to decrease.

5) OSHA
Administrative Law Judge: The Court finds that these provisions of the MUTCD
are not mandatory.
I think the Judge
made a mistake and OSHA will win some on appeal.

6) Other
categories that saw year-over-year increases in occupational fatalities
included workers aged 65 and over; the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas
extraction industry; fatal injuries involving confined spaces; and fatal
