OSHA News for
June 2019
It took a while
for the temperature be over 85 degrees. Now we have a warm summer. It is always
good time to ensure that your heat
stress training was conducted. I am a fan of the newer electrolyte products
such as Kramp Krusher.
I will be
speaking on OSHA for small business on July 18 at Prairie State. The is a first safety day for the area with
OSHA co-organizing the sessions. See #1 in the news.
I am seeing many
dump truck accidents in the Midwest. See #1 in other news. There needs to control of any dump trucks
entering a construction zone. They need a backup alarm that is 3 dba above the
surrounding noise levels. A spotter also should be provided.
5 things from
June's Lockout audits
1. Verification
step must be on the energy control procedure.
2. There must be
a step to verify that pressure is zero. A guage or bleeding the valve is one
way.
3. Compactors
need energy control procedures and confined space programs.
4. The photos of
where to shut off energy must match practice and the energy control procedures.
5. The periodic
review is annually. Too many are missing all authorized employees for 2018.
Many have not started 2019 audits
This month’s ppt
is Radium Girls. It covers the painful lesson of Radium poisoning in IL.
Have a safe
Fourth of July. Wear eye and hand protection if using fireworks.

13) These dollar
stores lead any sector in OSHA exit violations. This in Omaha, Nebraska.
The violations
that were considered serious, OSHA said, included an emergency exit door that
was locked with a scissor like mechanism that required special knowledge to
open. In addition, OSHA said, overhead fluorescent lighting near a wash basin
in a back room of the store had exposed live parts that weren’t protected from
contact.

5) 50 years ago.
It was the disaster that ignited an environmental revolution. On this day, June
22, in 1969, the Cuyahoga River burst into flames in Cleveland when sparks from
a passing train set fire to oil-soaked debris floating on the water's surface.
Yes, an oil slick
on the Cuyahoga River - polluted from decades of industrial waste - caught fire
on a Sunday morning in June 1969 near the Republic Steel mill, causing about
$100,000 worth of damage to two railroad bridges. ... The '69 fire was not even
the first time that the river burned.
