osha news August 2021

OSHA News for August 2021 Hello, This was a month of audits. I got to go to some large companies and see some good best practices. I am seeing many China Shackles used. One Chinese manufacturer said the shackle was not to be used for personnel safe lifting or lifting safety. This month’s powerpoint is a custom one that I did for a large mechanical contractor. They wanted all employees to learn some lockout and confined space. The workers that would enter a confined space or lockout would take a four hour version. Custom training is the growing area of safety. They said the past lockout was only for machines that they would never lockout. Online training is ending, and classroom training is in demand. The delta variant is causing companies to require vaccination or proof of a negative covid tests. Stay cool in the hot August. . Water should be cool, potable, and near the work area. Encourage workers to hydrate themselves John OSHA News. 1) 10 Months in jail for trench death. https://www.equipmentworld.com/business/article/15066701/contractor-gets-10-months-in-jail-for-trench-death?fbclid=IwAR01uV3MgtvK1cC_Hds4Dp77gEW6tP4LLSmeIHLF8M87QZNZWmBLIuxYVDE 2) OSHA has levied a big batch of fines -- just shy of $1 million -- over the disaster at Foundation Food Group, the Georgia poultry plant where six workers died in January due to a liquid nitrogen leak. TX is 350, AZ is 224, MO 193. Florida is becoming the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, and just this week, cases jumped 50 percent, with more than 110,000 new cases reported. Case numbers are now back to where they were in January before the vaccine became available. According to the Florida Health Department, the new positivity rate for all of Florida is at 18.1%. In Broward, it’s 14%, Miami-Dade is at 12.1%, and Monroe County is at 16.2%. Florida now has more people hospitalized than any other state Dr. Yvonne Johnson, Chief Medical Officer at Baptist South Miami Hospital, said the number of patients in her COVID ward has quadrupled in the past 3 weeks. “Eighty to eighty-five percent of those people who are hospitalized are unvaccinated. And 100 percent of the people in my IUC are unvaccinated. All those people are suffering unnecessarily.” Other hospitals like Memorial Health Care System say they are overwhelmed “This morning, we had over 420 patients with COVID. And 55 are in the ICU.” “In the ICU, 55 people are fighting for their lives and only one of them is unvaccinated.” “Most of the patients are in their 30s and 40s and it is very sad to have someone die in the ICU by themselves without a touch of someone’s face of seeing loved ones,” said Juana Mejia, a COVID ICU nurse manager. Health officials in Austin, Texas, issued a dire warning on Friday: There are only about 16 staffed ICU beds left for the entire region, an 11-county area that's home to more than two million people. It's the lowest number of ICU beds available in the region since the pandemic began, the city said. Since July 15, hospitalizations in Dallas County have increased from 181 to 397, according to Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. The number of patients in the ICU has increased from 53 to 120 over the same time period, Jenkins said. The Delaware DOH The two people who died range in age from their 60s to 80s, bringing Delaware’s total number of Covid-related deaths to 1,700, more than the population of the Kent County town of Cheswold. Neither person was vaccinated, both had underlying health conditions. Neither resided in long-term care facility. Nearly all deaths in recent weeks came from individuals who were not fully vaccinated. "The hospitalization and ICU rates are going up like a rocket," said Nebraska Medicine's Dr. James Lawler. Lawler said with the sudden rise of more sick people now in the hospital, there will be grim news come Labor Day. "It takes about a month before you start seeing deaths in your community in a pandemic wave," he said. Alabama now added probable and confirmed COVID deaths as one total. Sunday, June 18, 2021 – 590839 deaths, 34.7 million infections, 161,2 million fully vaccinated, 186.0 million one dose 2) CDC Press Conference on updated mask guidance: CDC confirms that it is recommending everyone wear masks indoors in areas with highly or substantial transmission (Map below); some vaccinated people can spread virus to others, but vast majority of transmission is happening among unvaccinated people; Vaccines are still highly effective against severe disease with delta variant 3) Another forklift death at Menards https://www.fox9.com/news/menards-closes-golden-valley-store-for-night-after-family-protests-workers-death 4) Contractor caused Chemtool accident https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/608043200?fbclid=IwAR2Wnh0JjNk1PmK-HmwdxRj2MJp-JmVuHA049gO8Wbde1LtWfRy1STenQNU 5) 100 treated for chemical at Six Flags. https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2021/07/17/fire-crews-responding-to-chemical-leak-at-six-flags-hurricane-harbor-in-spring/?fbclid=IwAR01uV3MgtvK1cC_Hds4Dp77gEW6tP4LLSmeIHLF8M87QZNZWmBLIuxYVDE 6) Four dead from CO https://www.wsaz.com/app/2021/07/18/4-michigan-festivalgoers-dead-3-exposed-carbon-monoxide/?fbclid=IwAR2H1E2bfAsPte-PtB-JIhZ6pHSSp9JnyC-pD7iX51GOhNvmksrGHII9Ad0 7) Lockout failure cost teen forearm. https://www.businessinsurance.com/article/20210708/NEWS08/912343087/Supermarket-fined-after-teen%E2%80%99s-arm-amputated?fbclid=IwAR3LBZH9N-jgQvrjCsasNxzvIwsnwuRUdUdaAP8cu_ehLVqM7YwtQqegUg8 8) A medical examiner in Michigan says an autopsy has determined that Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast, and not a fall, as authorities previously reported.
